Technology vs. Science.

Kamangir | October 19, 2004 | Category Iran

Today I was in this “Video Processing” class. In the class room you hear of many sophisticated methodologies and scientific approaches, but when you come to the real world, there is not much of that available.
For example, a few years ago the MPEG1 stnadard was legalized. Nowadays, everybody thinks about MPEG1 as something easily available in the market, but it is not! The exact thing people are facing everyday is a limited implementation of MPEG1 as its single layer representation. In fact, the MPEG standards category relies on high performance segmentation methods that have not ever been developed. I regret seeing people everyday that think they are familiar with science, but the real thing they are familiar with is the science fiction films.

Once upon a time, I was working in a team aimed at internet pornography filtering using content-based methods. Our main focus was analyzing images and finding out if they were containing eroticisme. I quit the work there, in spite of the high payments. The reason was that I found out that people are not ready for the small achievements of the science, just because they are mind washed by the Holywood.
