Information Age Madonna

When I started to work on my Ph.D. I quit an important part of my life. Actually, I am not seeing Lenna any more (see her in the image in the right). Lenna (more commonly known as Lena) is a sample image very frequently used in image processing literature. Open an issue of IEEE Transaction on image processing and you will see her face in at least one paper. Although, she has inspired many researchers for more than 30 years, she was actually not a very geek lady. Actually, Lenna posed nude in the November 1972 issue of Playboy and sold 7,161,561 copies (see). Then, at the early days of image processing, people working on developing a database for standardizing algorithms and making comparison applicable, scanned the image and put it in the USC-SIPI database (see)(there has been slight copyright
concerns over that). There are several other pictures in the database which are also famous, though, not as famous as Lena is, like Peppers and Mandrill. To make the story more interesting, the original picture was not showing an innocent lady starring at the camera. Actually, it shows a naked woman standing in front of a mirror. You can see the original picture here (warning! Includes nudity see). She is also called “Information Age Madonna” (see). She was invited to IS&T’s 50th Annual Conference where she realized that she has been beneficial to some people other than those who pay for pornography. Though, you would be surprised to know that a major source of funding for working on watermarking came from Playboy.

Gunmen destroyed a shrine in Iraq. Then, some Iranian guys gathered in front of the Britain embassy and burned US flag.

People are collecting signatures to ask Google to acknowledge Norouz (see). Norouz, means new day, is the celebration of the first day of spring, March 21st in Iran (see).
