Celebration

Kamangir | April 11, 2006 | Category Iran

In his final years, Iran’s last Shah celebrated what he called the “2500-th anniversary of Iranian kingdom”. Many observers think the count down for him began then. The event was decorated with people resembling Iranian military groups from different epochs.

Wearing traditional Iranian clothes, the beginning of a new era for the Islamic Republic is celebrated. The metallic objects hold the first Yellow Cake produced by Iranians during the Uranium enrichment process.

Are we experiencing another major event in Iran’s history?

The canisters probably contain small (symbolic) amounts of UF6 (uranium hexa fluoride) gas, enriched to reactor grade (3.5 w% U235), not yellow cake (UO2 - uranium dioxide). In solid form 3.5 enriched UO2 would be quite dangerous, even in relatively small quantities.

Your comic strip was funny though! Love these costumes: looks like something out of Tin Tin album (”Tin Tin in Trans-Moldavia”).

    Hi Gert
Thanks for correcting me. I even doubt if the rods contain anything. As you have mentioned, Uranium is not something you can easily play with. Also, the security concerns will be serious then.

Actually, silly me stands corrected too: yellowcake is indeed a uranium oxide but not UO2. It is U3O8… Don’t you just love chemistry? (I do, actually)

    Best regards.

    Hi Gert
Actually, I know nothing about chemistry. I have not taken any course on chemistry for 10 years. However, when it comes to something called U* I would say it is not a simple H2O or NaCl. Anyway, thanks!
