Iranian Halloween

Kamangir | October 20, 2006 | Category Iran

A few years after the revolution, and thanks to Khomeini’s fierce order, we started to celebrate Halloween in Iran, just like all other cool people. This is how we do it.

We wear costumes.

And make funny puppets,

which then we burn.

We also draw funny cartoons.

We play with fire,

And who cares if sometimes a few details are wrong.

Kids have fun, too.

Basically, everybody is there.

The good thing about our Halloween is that it is also a very good occasion for our politicians to repeat their statements and point at the crowd and say “see! These people are supporting me!”

Iranian chief nuclear negotiator.

We also assert a few political ideas, there.

Like, having Quran in one hand and a sling in the other one, and you guess what that means.

Recently, we have been enjoying using different languages.

Can any one read this Hebrew text (click to enlarge)?

Is it Indian?

Well, frankly speaking, sometimes we do get mad.

Or bored.

And, yes, we also remember whom we have unfinished business with.

But, at the end, it is a nice colorful day.

    Matthew,
That was nice. By the way, as I remember this band was pro-Ahmadinejad. Have they changed sides?

Honestly, I’m not sure. My Persian is not good enough to understand them without the dictionary.

    Matthew,
They talk about freedom and oppression and stuff like that.

I caught the ‘azadi’ in there, it’s tough to find a lot of persian media in the US. BBC for all its faults is a good start.

This website might help you decipher the script in the picture above. I’ll tell you now it’s not Hindi

    Matthew,
Yes, they talk about Azadi (freedom), in the sense which opposses IRI.
Thanks for the link. How did you kow it is Kayahli? Still, I think I need help.

    Arash joon,
I’m sure it’s an Indonesian/Malay language but then the question comes, which one? There’s roughly 100 distinguished languages in that region but only a few with writing systems. The script in the photo best matches kayahili but I will run it by my friend who’d know best. Will get back to you..

    Matthew,
    Thank you very much.
Do you have any idea what’s the relationship between an Indonesian/Malay language and an Anti Israel protest?

Possibly that Malaysia is the largest Muslim nation in the world.

    Adam,
    Good thinking.
