Iranian American Student Abused By UCLA UCPD With Tazer Gun

Kamangir | November 16, 2006 | Category Iran

This is copied from Iranian Truth. He also links to a video showing the scene. This is bizarre.

UCPD officers shot a student several times with a Taser inside the Powell Library CLICC computer lab late Tuesday night before taking him into custody.

No university police officers were available to comment further about the incident as of 3 a.m. Wednesday, and no Community Service Officers who were on duty at the time could be reached.

At around 11:30 p.m., CSOs asked a male student using a computer in the back of the room to leave when he was unable to produce a BruinCard during a random check. [iPouya: Yes, all Iranians and Arabs know about these “random” checks.] The student did not exit the building immediately.

The CSOs left, returning minutes later, and police officers arrived to escort the student out. By this time the student had begun to walk toward the door with his backpack when an officer approached him and grabbed his arm, at which point the student told the officer to let him go. A second officer then approached the student as well.

The student began to yell “get off me,” repeating himself several times.

It was at this point that the officers shot the student with a Taser for the first time, causing him to fall to the floor and cry out in pain. The student also told the officers he had a medical condition.

UCPD officers confirmed that the man involved in the incident was a student, but did not give a name or any additional information about his identity.

Video shot from a student’s camera phone captured the student yelling, “Here’s your Patriot Act, here’s your fucking abuse of power,” while he struggled with the officers.

As the student was screaming, UCPD officers repeatedly told him to stand up and said “stop fighting us.” The student did not stand up as the officers requested and they shot him with the Taser at least once more.

“It was the most disgusting and vile act I had ever seen in my life,” said David Remesnitsky, a 2006 UCLA alumnus who witnessed the incident.

As the student and the officers were struggling, bystanders repeatedly asked the police officers to stop, and at one point officers told the gathered crowd to stand back and threatened to use a Taser on anyone who got too close.

Laila Gordy, a fourth-year economics student who was present in the library during the incident, said police officers threatened to shoot her with a Taser when she asked an officer for his name and his badge number.

Gordy was visibly upset by the incident and said other students were also disturbed.

“It’s a shock that something like this can happen at UCLA,” she said. “It was unnecessary what they did.”

Immediately after the incident, several students began to contact local news outlets, informing them of the incident, and Remesnitsky wrote an e-mail to Interim Chancellor Norman Abrams.

Sad story, do you think organisations such as NIAC help in these situations?

    Homeyra,
I hope so. Still, I think it should be considered in a broader perspective. Not especially because an Iranian or a Muslim has been treated so brutally.

  4. kamangir |

    Ali,
Thanks for the link. But, as I have also mentioned in your blog, I see no relevance between this story and religion, specifically Islam.

  5. Ali |

It is not irrelevant. You asked what if he was a Jew? He wasn’t. When was the last time you heard of a Jewish college student being brutally handled by the police. It is relevant to Islam, because people have Eyes. You can tell who is Middle Eastern (Arab/Iranian) who is South Asian who is American, etc, by many things, skin, face, hair, voice, accent, name, etc. if you don’t think this or know this you must be an idiot. Anyway no disrespect to you brother but this issue occur because he was seen as a middle eastern looking guy not in compliance with the rules so hey let’s humiliate him in front of everyone. They did not likely go look at him and think “Gee, Ahmadinejad Saab has been arresting too many protesters lately’ they look at him and say “that fucking sand nigger”.

  6. Ali |

Also Kamangir it is funny you say “Please do not relate this to irrelevant issues…What if he was a Jew? Would there be any difference?…”

Why you are naming this post “IRANIAN AMERICAN STUDENT…” then … ? What if he was Chinese? would there be any difference?…

  7. kamangir |

    Ali,
Do you call your brother an idiot?

  8. kamangir |

    Ali,
I mentioned in the beginning of the post, I have copied everything.

  9. Ali |

    ya Rabb…

    Kamangir Saab,
You would do well as Ahmadinejads replacein Iran, because you love to dodge the issue at hand. Forget that I said “if you … you are an idiot” - I did not directly call you an idiot, I simply use a harsh tone, I apologize if you are offended برادر.

Even if you copy the whole post, then why this “…is filed under Iran, United States of America, Iranian Students.” You are guilty of your own accusations. Thus, this is directly relevant to Islam va Muslimeen.

    Ali,
Peace please! I suspect you can use the tags Muslim and Islam. :)

  11. Farzin |

    Ali,
Just because he was Iranian it doesn’t mean that he is Muslim. why cann’t you look at him az a human?

[...] I Hate So I Am By Arash (Iran) The recent event in UCLA brought about new insight into the hidden layers of our e-society.The story began from blogs. Personally, I first heard of the story in Iranian Truth. I was so shocked that I copied the post (which is now modified) in my blog and also in here. Then, I tried to inform more people using Balatarin (an Iranian link dump) and also email. These actions took less than half an hour, after which I was only an observer for over three days, reading people’s comments in YouTube and elsewhere. Amazingly, we all seem to be full of hatred. We just really need a reason to bombard each other. [...]

    Nima,
I really don’t know what to say.

A note from Canada (way North): At least this student did not have an ID on him (big crim these days when your color of skin is not too whitish in USA) . In 1979, I was finger printed, questioned and photographed like a delinquent simply because I was an Iranian student at a state university. That was the time which I decided to leave the land of freedom. Do not be surprised because you will see more and more of this everyday in the jangle which is usually refer to incorrectly as the leader of free world. In a little while, it will be the day that all of you Iranians will be in the camps with walls around you, the same as Japanese 60 years ago since not much has change in last 100 years in U. S. of American.

  17. kamangir |

    Mehrdad,
With all respect I do not see those walls.
