Another Footage

Kamangir | February 8, 2007 | Category Iran

This footage was aired in the national television, claiming to show an anti-ship missile, called SSN4, tested in Sepah’s undergoing drill. I am afraid the footage shows that the missile slips away from the target and sinks in the ocean. I hope Brando tells us what exactly has happened there.

All those different variants of the Soviet “Sunburn” missile are confusing. It looks like a land based “Exocet” type missile. It’s most definitely a concern for shipping. Many ships are armed with defenses to try to knock it down, but the trick is seeing it quickly enough. I’m not expert, and I just did some quick internet research. The “never lying” internet says that the SeaRAM anti-missile missile, has a success rate of over 95%, but in a battlefield condition, it’s sure to be lower. The SSN4, seems to be a pretty old design, yet effective. The SSN5 came out in 1963. I think the newest one is the SSN22. If there’s a war, the opening stages are sure to be a cruise missile battle.

On that video, there doesn’t need to be a direct hit in order to render a ship combat ineffective. Although it didn’t look to hit it in the hull right at the waterline, it can still mess things up pretty bad. It’s a real threat.

    Brando,
    Thanks.

I just watched that video for the first time with sound. They’re screaming “Allah Ackbar!” Yikes.

Looks like it didn’t have a good signal lock on the target. But it’s a large enough missile to do a lot of damage, even with a near-miss.

    Yeah, effective especially if Iran’s enemies use a non-moving non-defensive strategy. :-)

They’d probably be better off firing shells. It’s cheaper and faster and probably just as accurate.

Always the problem with taking large warships into restricted waterways, such as the Gulf. Not a lot of manuever room, or response time.

I can’t but wonder how much of their deployment there is simply to bait Iran.

Just a guess, but it is possible that the missile was not armed with explosives. In any event I hope we never have to use any of these weapons.
    PEACE

    I don’t think it’s a stretch at all.

The American public would never condone a war with Iran unless Iran makes the first war-like move. Sorta how Afghanistan was a popular move for us, but not Iraq.

I’m starting to sound all conspiracy theory-like. It’s the weekend! Time to let loose!

    Have a great one, everyone!

    Agreed.
