Babel, a $20-Worth Question

Kamangir | March 1, 2007 | Category Iran

Just a quick question, which is worth $20. Azadeh and I, and two other friends, watched Babel last night. And, I must confess, we were watching someone else’s “backup”. Thus, we did not have a subtitle. Now the question is, are you supposed to watch Babel only with a subtitle? Was Babel shown in theaters with a subtitle? Is the whole concept of the movie not to be able to know what people are talking about, but to be able to understand what is going on because some things do not depend on any specific language?

Remember, I will loose $20, and I will be ridiculed, if I am wrong. If you agreed with me, for which I need a very strong comment, please send me your PayPal information.

The non-English parts do have subtitles.

According to the Bible G-d was angered at man’s attempt to build the Tower of Babel, and they were made to all speak different languages. This is supposed to have stopped the building of the tower, and people scattered all over the world.

    Robby,
    Come on! Can’t you lie?

I thought the film was meant to be the way you describe it, Kamangir. Otherwise, what is the meaning of the film?

On the grand scale though, I am glad to see so many films being shown in the UK in the US with subtitles. About a year ago most of my friends would never have gone to see a film with subtitles. It’s a small step towards anglos understanding the notion that there’s a world full of humanity out there.

Just tell your friends you translated my answer and got confused.

If subtitles helped you to understand this mishmash, then they are good…on the other hand -

If subtitles helped you to understand this mishmash, then you are unique.

I thought the film would have been a thousand times better if they stuck to one story. Only individual scenes stick out in your mind - the story is lost in translation.

Me, I’m waiting for “300″ to open, with apologies to ancient Persian kings, and all.

    Trainer,
Actually, I think I am going to watch it with my wife whenever it comes to the theaters. For the Persian kings, I have watched enough movies which ridicule the Zionists and the Imperialists. Let the “good” fellows be on the grill for a while.
