Readers more familiar with the structure of the IR probably know about the Expediency Discernment Council (EDC), headed by Rafsanjani, Ahmadinejad’s main rival in the elections. EDC members are appointed by the Supreme Leader and act in serious struggles, including when the parliament and the Guardian Council fail to find a deal. EDC has also almost successfully tried to spread its power to be a key player in many strategic decision-makings.
Rafsanjani had an interview today. There, he stated these words,
After the establishment of the new government [of Ahmadinejad], I met with the leader. It had appeared to us that the bills the government sent to the parliament did not follow the general policies [of the regime devised in EDC and signed by the leader]. At the end, it was decided that some time should be given to the new government…before we carry out precise supervision. I think that time is over and we should begin a serious supervision on the government’s actions. Recently, it was discussed whether or not we should supervise the budget [which is planned by the government]. It was approved [by the EDC] that…we can have a supervision on the budget.
Ladies and gentlemen, let the war begin….

I am not really good at Iranian politics, but I think that Rafsanjani is only a tiny bit better than Ahmadinejad. Rafsanjani’s economic politics are not much better than Ahmadinejad’s and he will do nothing about wide-spread corruption. He will put his people in the key positions and they will make money and more money. As for Rafsanjani international politics his aims are the same as Ahmadinejad’s its just that the execution and retorics are more subtle.

Israeli Intelligence Chief: Iran Training Hamas
Los Angeles Times: TEL AVIV — The head of Israel’s domestic intelligence agency said Monday that Iran was giving advanced military training to members of Hamas, a move he called a “strategic danger” to the Jewish state. Yuval Diskin, the director of Shin Bet, said that the militant movement had dispatched “tens” of fighters from the Gaza Strip to Iran for “months, maybe years” of instruction, and that Iran had promised to train hundreds more.
