IR and Thieves’ Fingers

Kamangir | March 7, 2007 | Category Iran

It seems that the recent finger-cutting-related incidents were part of an emerging trend. According to IRNA, the head of the Judiciary in Kermanshah Province stated “since I started my job earlier this day, my first priority has been to take decisive action [against those who disturb the public convenience] and to carry out the Sharia law”. He mentioned the last instance of his “efforts” to have been the amputation of four fingers of a thief in public. He added “after the verdict was carried out, we received appreciation letters from people.” He continued “news have poured out of the courts that, under interrogation, thieves are worried that their hand [fingers] may be cut off. We are not going to change our approach, they should stop stealing to save their hands”.
