Evidence for a Face off on Sale for £89.99 on eBay (Updated)
Kamangir | March 29, 2007 | Category Iran
Update: Let me make myself clear. I don’t think it would make any difference if what they published as pictures of the GPS was in fact a plastic toy. Look at it as trying to be funny at the middle of the hell.
From eBay
From BBC.
Apparently, the GPS which the British officials used to prove the fallacy of the Islamic Republic’s claims is not exactly how much sophisticated it might seem to be at the first sight. In fact, you can buy it on eBay for £89.99.
No offense, but I guess they should have used something a bit more military-looking for this big crisis. Not that I think that it matters at all whether or not the British soldiers have in fact “invaded” the Iranian territory.
The story is even more interesting than that. The Persian BBC translated the caption of the picture as “Satellite-based Tracking System for Sea Vessels”, while the description on eBay calls this device a “Stand-alone Navigation” system.
Thanks to quantacrustal for the hint.
The ebay is an online store where you can get your hands on all types of home accessories ranging from a fire place to heavy furniture. You can view items like electric fireplaces from each and every angle and better decide which fireplace mantel to use.

“Stand-alone Navigation
If by “stand-alone” they mean a constellation of incredibly expensive satellites, working in concert with known points broadcasting on the ground; then yes, I suppose a GPS receiver is completely stand-alone.
The GPSr doesn’t actually determine your position on the globe, because your position can only be determined in relation to other things. It just averages and displays that position.
Brando,
I am sure you know about this stuff much more than any other reader of this blog. Do you think what BBC showed is in fact a military-level equipment? Also, does it matter if a GPS is a “Navigation” device or a “Tracking” one?
I am not a person that deals with the GPS locating devices. In fact I am somewhat paranoid about what they do and avoid them. Hey I will not even buy a cell phone as nosy people and companies can track you with those devices. I plan on keeping my life as private as possible. But I did deal with electronics in general for years and the one thing I learned about their cost was that today’s expensive showpiece is tomorrow’s WalMart bargain basement special. My only questions would be is the device capable of performing what the Brits say it shows; and is the information they are offering fact or conjecture? Global tracking devices have come a long way in a short time. Anything that a commercial service like TomTom can use to inform travelers how to navigate in US traffic must be a fairly complicated and scary. I refuse to buy newer automobiles simply because GPS is becoming standard equipment on new vehicles. No thank you, Big Brother.

Brando! as you might be aware GPS systems all work based on the position of 12 military satellites around the globe . they some times have incredible resolutions . even the mentioned above GPS resolution is up to 3 meters .
Anyway archer made a very wise point about the difference between Positioning devices and Tracking systems
You fail to mention that the inexpensive unit pictured is accurate to within 10 feet. The most expensive units are accurate to less than 1 foot.

Russian said the strike against Iran will be next month.
Paleo,
Sorry, I did not know that. What does it mean?
Marrya,
So, there is difference between them. Any one has more information?
این کمپانی سرویس ردیابی هم میده پس اصلا بعید نیست که برای ارتش (نیروهای) انگلیسی یه مدل تخصصی بده:
Thanks to the real-time information transmitted through the GPS-Buddy unit, fleet managers can know where their fleet is and communicate with the drivers 24-hour-a-day, 7-days-a-week,†said Gary Kelley, vice president of marketing for Garmin International
در ضمن:
The GPS 72/76 series units are capable of providing a data output to allow real-time tracking on a PC. You can use Garmin’s nRoute application and/or some 3rd-party applications. When using nRoute for your real-time tracking, set your GPS 72/76 series unit to GARMIN under the interface setup and NMEA for use with non-Garmin software. The nRoute application is a free download for current users of Garmin’s family of MapSource products

The military units are Puggers and Daggers. I’ve only had my hands on the Plugger. It’s not uncommon for military units to use the civilian versions, not only because they’re smaller, but you can just buy it yourself, and then you own it.
The only reason I was saying that a receiver doesn’t determine position, is akin to the way a wristwatch doesn’t determine the flow of time. The GPS coords are good evidence for the UK, but not quite proof.
Brando,
Thanks.
Here we go again, Iran has published another letter allegedly written by Leading Seaman Faye Turney in which she supposedly calls for British forces to withdraw from Iraq.
The letter also asks the British Government why it allowed the British captives to stray into Iranian waters.
And it goes on to say the group is being treated well by the Iranians.
Do they really have no idea how the west will receive the idea of a woman/mother being held captive and coerced into propagandizing for a terrorist power?

We have a GPS thing for the boat so if we get lost, we can tell someone where we are, they would then use the data or coordinates we gave from our GPS and use their maps or navigation charts to locate us. You also use the GPS to then help you navigate and to navigate you use charts and the knowledge in your head on how you chart and navigate. Some hard core guys don’t even use the GPS. The GPS is just a tool, like a calculator, it just eases the effort of calculation and for many people they feel their position will be more accurate and reliable if the use the GPS. It is high tech but only because of the system it relies on, the device itself is not all that impressive.
I would imagine the 15 Royal navy personel now being held captive were all trained to chart and navigate and I would imagine all their charts are up to date and accurate. That would be probably one thing they would have that would be above and beyond any private or civilian capability, good military charts and maps.
The information the UK released is just coordinates, coordinates they claim were also confirmed by the civilian ship that was also involved with the incident. I have no idea why the focus is on the little blue GPS if they wanted an alternative coordinate to be shown on that little lone device all they would have to do is go place the unit there and push a button.
That device keeps a ‘breadcrumb trail’ as you move around, marking your location every few minutes. That would be pretty compelling evidence; there may be some sort of magical device for falsifying that, but as far as ordinary tech goes…you would really have to go to all those places to make the trail.
I own that one. It definitely isn’t milspec, but I understand lots of soldiers carry them because they’re cheap and easy to use. I use it to plot my hikes on Google maps when I get home — you can superimpose the GPS trail on the map and see where you’ve been.
