“Hello Mr. Wolf”, on the Beginning of Iran-US Negotiations

Kamangir | May 15, 2007 | Category Iran

English translation of a post by Jomhour.

Hello Mr. Wolf

In the recent twenty years and so, leaders of Iran have always rejected any negotiation with the US. Ayatollah Khomeini resembled the communication between Iran and America to the friendship between a sheep and a wolf. After him, Ayatollah Khamenei, in one of his most famous speeches, called those who talk about negotiation with the US as people who either have no sense of pride or lack any knowledge about politics.

However, yesterday, the speaker of the Foreign Ministry officially announced that delegations from the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States of America will talk in Baghdad in a short while. In another news, Dick Cheney’s speaker welcomed this development and announced America’s preparedness for the negotiations, which will be solely on Iraq. Although both sides claim that the main reason behind the negotiations is the situation in Iraq, the beginning of negotiations can anyhow be the beginning of solving decades-old quarrels which have affected domestic and foreign politics of Iran.

Obviously, these development have enemies in Iran, in the US, and in the region. The main opposition is anticipated to be by the rival parties in Iran, the opposition and monarchists, and Israeli and Arabian lobbies.

Many will ask why there were times that even talking about negotiating with the US was considered an illegality and those who spoke of it were accused of betrayal and closeness to the enemy but now the issue is talked about freely….

Although the administration of the time consists of people who have led Iran to weakness and crisis, it seems that only the Allah-connected government and parliament was able to get the permission for the negotiations and not be accused of betrayal and naiveness.

Looking at the reputation of the US, the results of these negotiations can bring about serious changes in foreign and even domestic politics of Iran. Although, it is still very early to judge this issue.

“Looking at the reputation of the US, the results of these negotiations can bring about serious changes in foreign and even domestic politics of Iran”

What serious changes? are you joking?! because that’s not even funny. American government’s reputation for making peace with dictatorial regimes has never been positive for any one besides America and the ruling government of the poor nation. An obvious example where America has turned a blind eye on the human rights record is China, where it is still a one party state with the most executions in the world.

The Hezbollahis, Basijis and religious population will not be happy, because this is against the fundamental ideology of the revolution.

And Why pick out only the monarchists? The opposition to the government including the left or the right such as the nationalists, republicans and the lsocialist, etc will all be disappointed if America makes peace with Islamic Republic.

Do you really think American influence can fundamentally change the structure of power or the human rights conditions in the Islamic Republic?!

Hmmm. If Cheney should offer to take him hunting he will have displayed telling intentions.

City boy: The losers in this whole fiasco will be the Iranian people. The only winner is the Islamic Republic and their minions, including the reformers who want “engagemnt” and “glorious talks” not because they care about Iran. Their utmost concern is their own position and status in the government and maintaining their continued privilege of theft, profiteering, and debauchery.

And what does the U.S. gain here: Nothing but empty promises that are not going to be kept and intransigence in foreign policy (a euphemism for the regime’s policy of sponsoring terror and destabilizing its neighbors)and possibly expediting the emergence of China as a superpower who has imperialistic intention of its own and will not be as nice as the fickle superpowr that America has been.

The danger of offering ‘friendship’ and ‘hope’ to religious rulers such as Khamanie is that it will be interpreted as acquiescence by the United States to the policies of dictatorship and Islamic supremacy.
The regime will get much needed breathing room to continue to silence the dissidents in the name of Islam, and it would probably be a death knell for the women and Labor movement for a long while. If anything, the oppression and suppression of the Iranian people will intensify without having to worry about the outside pressure. Wanton brutality domestically, against brave civic and human rights activists will increase drastically with impunity. I can guarantee you that there has never been a case of rewarding and comprimising with religious ideologue tyrants where it has resulted in weakning of their resolve or lessening of the supression of their dissidents. You can’t make a deal with a *cause* such as Islam. Remember Khomeini used to say “Islam is in Danger”! He was right and he did something about it (mainly establishing the Islamic Republic and it’s global and far reaching foreign policy) and so far, his plans have been implemented with astonishing success, I might add.
