I am away for a conference and in the meantime the Islamic Republic is forced to come back to earth and start thinking rationally.  It is ridiculous for an OPEC member to import gas. Having said that, the Iranians have been bribed for a long time and will not quit cheap gas easily. I talked to a friend who has good insight into the gas business in Iran. Even before the riots broke out he was so anxious about this development, “this will be dangerous, Police is in full alert”. Do not miss the fantastic coverage Gateway Pundit is doing. Pajamas Media is also following the news. The picture is from here.

  1. Here is how news can be filtered/managed by Iranian authorities. This is how they reported the gas-rationing on their English run Press TV website (it will on satellite starting on July 2nd). The last sentence gives the main reason for the rationing!

Iran’s gas rationing plan is to be launched from midnight
National Iranian Oil Refining and Distribution Company (NIORDC) says its nationwide gasoline rationing plan has started from 12pm, July 26.

According to a statement issued on Tuesday, the company said that the gas rationing program would be implemented from today’s midnight local time.

The petrol quota for each group of vehicles including those used in the public services and public transportation system as well as private cars, is different. For each vehicle, depending on the type of service they give the quota ranges from 100 to 600 liters per month.

Each vehicle is permitted to use its ration of up to four months in advance if necessary.

Iranian motorists have been directed to express their views on the issue in particular regarding the amount of the quotas through a website designated for the purpose.

According to the statement the amount of rations might be revised in the future and for the time being the main aim of the plan is to come up with a more accurate amount of the quotas.

The Iranian officials hope that the plan would help prevent the smuggle of millions of liters of gas to the neighboring countries annually.

  4. Nice.
Here is how IRI reports who is rioting and who “really” according to IRI is behind rioting
The attacks on the petrol pumps were organised well in advance by ‘agents provocateurs’ working for the US government, who incited some deranged individuals to set petrol stations alight,” Morteza Tamaddon told journalists.
He also claimed that thousands of counterfeit dollars had been paid to these ‘deranged individuals’

Hmm, “poor deranged individuals” some of whom made money on the side as taxi drivers and now, if they go above limit, would have to buy petrol at inflated prices. No wonder they are getting “deranged”, losing some of your income may make one “deranged”.
