Finally, Something Good

It all started randomly, when Azadeh and I met Chantal in a meeting in University of Manitoba. Soon after she knew that we were Iranian, we started to realize how much she knew about the Persian culture as well as the geography of Iran, and even its politics. She even knew details such as the name of the religious figure who is buried in the city of Mashhad, in the north-east of Iran. That, however was not the main surprise of that visit.Chantal sings in Persian much better than many of us, Iranians, are able to sing. In fact, many of us cannot remember all the lyrics of the song she sings. Here is Chantal singing Gol-e Goldoon-e man by Simin Ghanem.

Before saying goodbye, she was kind enough to share with us her reason why Iran should not be attacked, “I’ll go talk to George Bush. A country with such great songs should not be attacked”. She said that, or something like that. I didn’t tell her how much complicated the whole story is. That even the Iranian administration would be happier if such songs never existed.

Listen to the podcast, which includes the song as well as her response to my question. I think I forgot to emphasize that Chantal is a French-Canadian and does not know Persian beyond a handful of everyday words.

   Kaman: Thank you for sharing. Iran should not be attacked because it would only save the mullahs job and add to the misery of Iranians and Americans in the long run.

   I have different reason why Iran should not be attacked. I think Iran should not be attacked because Iranians have such a good jokes and cartoons ;-)

   Great and very interesting conversation….;) Thanks to her that sings such a beautiful song so good, she has a awesome voice!…. Is she from Quebec? (you mentioned her as French-Canadian)…sometime ago, I read a book of a Canadian girl from Quebec about her visit to Iran…it was in French and like things you stated about Chantal, she also enjoyed her trip to Iran.

   آيا ممكن است شانتال همين ترانه رابه صورت جدي و كامل بدون سرو صداي اطرافش بخواند . به نظر من از سيمين غانم اگر بهتر نخواند , بدتر نيست. چندين بار گوش دادم و كيف كردم. اگردوباره در شرايط بهتري اين ترانه را خواند ما را مديون كنيد و صوت آن رادر اختيارمان بگذاريد. ممنون وسپاسگذار خواهم شد

   Translation: Can Chantal please sing this in a better environment, without all the noise?

   Kamangir: I keep telling her she should take her skills seriously.
