“Married Couples Should not Hold Hands in Public”

Kamangir | July 31, 2007 | Category Human Rights, Humour, Iran, Islam, Islamic Republic

It started when a top-ranking Police commander spoke about 5,265 “street-women” who were “talked to” during the veil crackdown. street-woman is the polite version of prostitute in contemporary Persian. That caused a few people to scratch their heads asking how many prostitutes really live in Iran. So, an official from the Judiciary came to the rescue, “That was a misunderstanding, the general meant women with improper outfits”. He went on by saying “The Police will not approach people until they act very improperly. Even if a married couple hold hands, the Police will not do anything, although it is not a proper act and married couples should refrain from it.”

You wrote: “street-woman is the polite version of prostitute in contemporary Persian”. You should keep in mind that is misleading to refer these kinds of lingoes to “contemporary Persian”. In reality, it is the language of Arabized/Islamized Iranian hostage taker.

Kamangir: I just meant the “current language of Iran”.
