Pro-Polygamy Bill in the Parliament

By Kamangir • Aug 8th, 2007 • Category: Human Rights, Iran, Islamic Republic, Women

According to a new bill just suggested by the government to the parliament, men do not have to ask the permission of their wife for a second marriage. According to the bill which is titled “Support for Families”, men only need to prove their economic power for the second marriage [Persian]. A member of the opposition in the parliament called the bill “a disaster” [Persian].

  1. We already have a happy polygamist community here in B.C., called Bountyful and our AG hasn’t got the courage to charge them.

  2. Please read my post on Sigheh. I also have a question for you regarding sigheh that is if you know the answer. Who gets the custody of a child born out of sigheh and who supports that child financially? Thanks.

Kamangir: Thanks. I will read the post as soon as possible. About the custody, I think it is none of the business of the man.

  3. I believe the child belongs to the girls family. These children are usually “hidden” away and ofcourse shunned by society.

  4. Ahwazi: What a horrible reflection on the state of family committments…Unbelievable that this has become a social norm in Iran.

  5. I also have to point out that Temporary marriage is only practiced by Shia religion not the Sunnis. Sunnis condem the practice and it’s a major point of secterain contention.

  6. Serendip: Every sector of Iranian life is struggling. I know I sound like a broken record but Iran and its culture is caste in total darkness. The leaders who rule it promote superstitions, violence, decadency, anything to undermine the Iranian heritage. When this nightmare is over we will appreciate the damage Khomeinie and his men inflicted on the land of Cyrus, Darius, Anoushiravan, Ferdosi, Hafez Shah Abbas, Karim Khan Zand, Mosaddeq and all the wonderful Iranians throughout histroy who loved Iran and brought it to the highest. Iran today is in the had of Zahak.

Well, temporary marriage was practiced mainly by Shia, but recently KSA was talking about allowing/popularising something similar to sigheh. I think they call it misyar and it is supposedly allowed under Suni Islam.
As for the bill, I think it is awful and the name is a terrible joke.

  8. Ella you’re right but in the sunni population it has not become a social norm as means of self-preservation and combating poverty. This is the case in Iran.

  10. Has the pro polygamy bill passed. What is the justification for it. Does it relate in any way to the fact that there is a shortage of men due to the Iran-Iraq war. Is it thought that it will reduce divorce. That is if the wife refused to permit a second wife the husband would divorce her.
