“Messenger”, the name of a new missile (Updated)
By Kamangir • Aug 27th, 2007 • Category: Iran, Islamic RepublicThe banner in the back reads “Mahdi, the superman who will save the world”.
The Minister of Defense attended the ceremony for the start of industrial-scale production of a two-thousand-pound intelligent bomb titled Qassed, means messenger in Persian/Arabic. Reportedly, Qassed is a ground-to-air missile, which is both intelligent and remotely controllable. The far-reaching missile is claimed to have been designed using the most advanced technologies in the world, solely by Iranian experts. The minister stated in the ceremony, “We will not oppress anyone and will not accept oppression. We will not attack and will not stand an attack.” The ceremony was also the start of manufacturing new types of penetrating bullets [Persian]. See more pictures in the photoblog.
Update:Iran very proud of its copy of an obsolete U.S. guided bomb

lol @ superman translation! No doubt these weapons will be sold to Iraqis, it will be interesting to see if these weapons even the playing field a bit in Iraq. Iran is really starting to show who the leader in the Muslim world is, they’ve certainly won my respect..
Vpendse, you mean that Sadr’s Mahdi Army, once they’re done butchering the Sunnis and suppressing the Kurds and any Iraqi Shi’a that may disagree with them, and once they have a “glorious Islamic Revolution”, will have better bombs? Oh, what fun, *more* mass-graves! As if Saddam wasn’t bad enough…
Boo-hoo!
The nation of peace continues to arm itself to teeth.

All of Iran’s ‘announcements’ lately, have been of technical advances that turn out to be slightly modified older gen US equipment and the like. Or wormholes and are highly suspect.
Next thing you know, they’ll announce they are starting production of two types of anti-matter bomb in jamakaran.
Kamangir: I hadn’t seen this! I’ll do a research on it right now!
It’s just a guided bomb. It’s a good piece of gear to cut down on collateral damage, but it is not a defensive weapon. Purely offensive, and it must be dropped from a plane. If there were a conflict between the US and Iran, I doubt that an F4 with a 2K bomb would have enough air superiority to be useful. Not unless they plan to dogfight and drop the bomb on another plane. Iran should buy more anti-aircraft missiles.
Brando
Who will sell Iran these anti-aircraft missiles? I believe Russia is playing both sides and Chinese also will think a little before selling IRI some latest munitions. On the other hand I have sneaking suspicion that Ahmadinejad does not think about defensive weapons. In my opinion he thinks…….. offense.

First of all, I just want to be sure that I’m not misrepresenting myself. I’m not an avionics or missile expert. I only understand the basics. I can speak about infantry tactics or counter/insurgency operations, but on the topic of early 80’s smart bombs, I’m going to have to stick to what I know. I know the difference between a bomb and a cruise missile.
I know that the US did business with Iran in the pre ‘79 days, and that’s why Iran has Paladins and Phantoms. I don’t know if 2K smart bombs were sold to some other country, and they made their way to Iran somehow. That information is way above my paygrade.
As a layman I can say that those two bombs look precisely the same.
I wish I could be more help, but I want to be careful not to speculate too much.
Kamangir: Thanks.
