If you think only Ahmadinejad uses/abuses Islam for his political goals, I should say you are too optimistic. See how one of Ahmadinejad’s biggest critics, Ghodrat-Allah Ali Khani (قدرت الله علی خانی) the MP from Qazvin, took an oath that if Ahmadinejad won in the presidential elections, which he did, he would resign, which he didn’t. The video has English subtitles.

If you noticed regular people were clamping (they were hoping he would resign). The clergy in the audience were not clamping because they knew that swearing on God in Iran by one of their own is a meaningless, empty promise that will never materialize!
