Numbers vs. Reality

Kamangir | September 15, 2007 | Category Human Rights, Iran, Islamic Republic

The National Youth Organization recently published interesting numbers, they claimed to have gathered in a scientific poll. Apparently,

83% of Iranian youth are proud of their Iranian nationality and more than 96% prefer Iran to other countries, when it comes to picking the place to live. Also, 84% of Iranian youth think they have a clear picture of their religious [Islamic] beliefs and 91% emphasis on family values. Furthermore, 87% of Iranian youth are proud to be a Muslim and 91% will defend their country [Persian].

I have no idea how they have come up with these numbers, but, in my department, more than half the graduate students speak Persian.

And right here in Tehran, I am having a difficult time finding someone with a “a clear picture of their religious [Islamic] beliefs” to interview!

And in *my* shehrestaan, 92% of our youth are proud to be Muslims and 93% would defend their country. 86% had bad hairstyles and 22% were headed for the methadone clinic.

hahaha… All of their stats. are beyond bogus and highly suspect. They are often manufactured. Recently, they changed the criteria for “poverty line” to “Survival line” to reduce the number of people who live below poverty line. “Survial Line” means, if you can dring water from joobs (swere in the street) and eat leaves from the trees, then you’re not poor (I’m paraphrasing an Iranina blogger form Iran, Shima)

This is from Azarmehr. Omanis have to constantly monitor their waters for fear of Iranian refugees entering Oman.
