“There is no obligation in the religion (Quran - Bull: 256). There is no obligation in God’s religion, don’t ban water on people!” The English translation of a Persian graffiti on a water cooler in Tehran metro. In order to observe fasting in the holy month of Ramadan, eating and drinking in public is seriously discouraged and can result in punishment. As a result, water coolers are shut down in public places. The text above shows that not everyone likes the mandatory practice of public fasting.

What if someone faints from dehydration in the metro and water is needed to revive him? What about little children? Pregnant women? Old frail people?

Just what I meant to ask as well, Noga.

It’s really more likely the water cooler wasn’t working that day.

Kamangir: Have you ever been in Iran?

For the one who was brave enough to write this, there is only this….

    Damet Garm!

Yes I have been to Tehran on several occasions. That is beside the point however, and I don’t like how you always put Iranians on a pedestal.

Kamangir: I put Iranians on a pedestal? I asked if you have been to Iran to make sure you are serious in saying “maybe the cooler was broke”. I guess having been in Iran for “several occasions”, you find yourself eligible to argue against someone who has lived there for a long while.

it is just the same in our campus … not only all water coolers are shut. they have set their security gaurds too to check and walk through corridors just in case!

Kamangir: For the information of our apologist friends here. :)

Maybe they just want to make sure no bad poetry is written during Ramadan:

Nulla placere diu nec vivere carmina possunt
    Quae scribuntur aquae potoribus.
    Hor. Epist. I.19

[No verse can give pleasure for long, nor last,
Which is written by water drinkers.]
