End of Ramadan
Kamangir | October 12, 2007 | Category Iran, Islam, Islamic Republic
As also mentioned before, every year, determining the last day of the holy month of Ramadan sets the play for grabbing the telescopes and going out to the deserts to find the moon. Yet, this is the modern way the clerics had fought against for a very long time, asserting that religion and science do not coincide. See more pictures in the photoblog.
Any way, happy end of Ramadan to all Muslims!

Heh, the months can be calculated in advance, which is why religious Jews have these rather convenient calendars which contain the times of day (from the crack of dawn to the start of the night) the periods during which particular prayers can be said (which depends on the time of day), various holidays, and days marking the start of month. We *do* celebrate new year’s over two days, mind, because back in the days of watching the moon and reporting via flame markers over distances (some two millenia ago) the Rabbis decided that the system, being a bit prone to error (as people are) could result in missing the correct day. Thus, the holiday was extended to both days, just in case.
Telescopes are nice, but mathematics is much better. ;-)
I would rather participate in a joyful event with family and friends than sit and use a calculator, but that’s just me :)
