New Look

By Kamangir • Feb 11th, 2008 • Category: Regular Posts

It was time to move on to a better template and make this place look a bit more mature. Nevertheless, this is still the personal blog of an Iranian engineering student in Canada. Your answers to the poll will be appreciated.

  1. Nice template Arash. Keep on blogging =)

    Kamangir: Thanks. :)

  2. Good job man.

  3. Did you design it yourself?

Kamangir: Of course not! The designer’s name is mentioned on the footprint.

  4. You respond as if you couldn’t possibly write the code for this new look…

It’s nice, though. And freeware I suppose? I’ve been thinking of leaving LiveJournal and hiring someone to customize my blog. It annoys me that LJ limits how many links you can have in the sidebar and the reverse chronological order with newest posts on the top, the standard for blogs, is annoying and wastes a lot of space. This look reminds me of a traditional newspaper with fewer long columns.

The only thing I would change is the BLOGROLL column. It would be easier on the eyes if you insert a small bullet between links to demarcate the blogs.

Kamangir: You need to know a lot about Wodpress in order to design a template for it. As of moving out of Livejournal, I strongly recommend moving into Wordpress. Please let me know if there is anything I can help you with.

p.s. And yes it is free to use.

  5. Wow! Looks less like a blog now, more like the homepage of a newspaper or a TV channel… But as long as it is the same old Arash who fills it with his thoughts, I shall like it very much in the future!

    Khoda-haafez,

    Liber

    Kamangir: Thanks. :)

  6. The new Template looks a lot nicer and more effective.

If I was forced to make any changes, I would do what Lesly suggested and also perhaps use a stronger colour for the links, especially the side links.

    Kamangir: Thanks Hamid Jan.

  7. I like the new look.
I have been on blogspot, and it has been very unreliable lately. I am looking at my options, and wordpress is one of them.
I see that you recommend wordpress.
I am pretty good at using applications, but programming makes my head turn into jelly. Is wordpress something that I could do?

  8. I don’t think I like it, Kaman. The various parts of the main page seem cluttered, and the main part of the blog (the posts) are pretty much shut in between secondary frames there. It’s like the single most important part of the blog is now a tiny column.

Too many headlines, not enough direct text. One reason I like blogs more than newspapers is because they have a more personal approach and a clear focus on the message of the blog author - I’m afraid that the side-effect of this template is that it looks too much like a newspaper, and thus loses one of its core impressions.

The pages of each individual post look good in this template, mind, but to say this in the most direct way possible - the main page, in its current form, makes me shudder. That’s not the kind of feeling I want to have when reading your blog, and while I’ll keep on coming back for the posts, actually navigating to them without wincing stopped being easy.

Kamangir: Thanks for your comments Roman. Many others, including myself, have the a similar idea.
